Goodreads Blurb:

After her adventures with the Key of Amatahns, sixteen-year-old Janir Caersynn Argetallam returns home to find Brevia on the brink of war with a neighboring country, Stlaven. Her foster-father and even Saoven—a brave young elf warrior—think it will be safe at the castle where Janir grew up. However, while trying to unravel a looming mystery, Karile—self-taught wizard and Janir’s self-appointed best friend—becomes certain that there is danger in the mountains surrounding Janir’s childhood home and that it has something to do with Stlaven’s most powerful family, the Vanmars…

My Thoughts: Very well written and exciting!

I have not read the first in this series, but other than some awkward moments where I was a little confused, it turned out not to be too big of a deal. This book was written very well, with a great rhythm and the plot was filled with action, a bit of romance and humour.

The prologue was chilling and a cryptic, and set the book off on a great start. The book continued in a manner that was fun and filled with adventure. Like I said, I was a little confused at some parts because I hadn't read the first book in the series, so the preliminary meeting of the characters and set up of the story wasn't there, but I don't think it made that much of a difference, considering Janir and her friends go on a completely different adventure this time. Plus, Janir explains to Armandius, her father figure, what happened after she left him (in the last book), so I was able to get a back story from that. There is a lot going on in the book and the characters, especially Janir, find themselves in some pretty crazy situations that take some work getting out of! I wasn't too sure on what was happening with Janir's past and her father, but I looked past all of the technicalities at one point and just really enjoyed the story. It was tons of fun to read. There was also Karile, Janir's best friend, who was really funny. He was always getting into ridiculous situations that turned out for the worse for him and Janir. He brought a smile to my face so many times while reading this book, which was nice. Then there's Saoven, the elf and potential love interest. Their relationship was a bit mysterious, but it was pretty obvious something was there and the spark was just waiting to burst into flames. I really liked all of the characters.

This story was filled with action. From the get-go there was loads of it which was nice and exciting. It wasn't my favorite book ever, but I did enjoy it. I think Wheatley is an extremely talented author. She has tons of imagination and knows how to contain it so that the story is suspenseful and hooks the reader in. It was such a pleasure reading her book and it left off on a great cliffhanger! I'm anxiously awaiting the next book that is released in 2013!

Sorry for the short little review! I guess what I had to say on the book didn't amount to as many words I thought it would! Oh well! If you're looking for a book that's mysterious, filled with adventure and sticky situations for the characters, check out The Secrets of the Vanmars!

Happy reading!
